CAMPUS LIFE EVENTS
October - December 2008
Mark your calendar now for these upcoming events:
Our Annual Bazaar will take place on Thursday, November 6th from
9:00am – 5:00pm in The Acorn’s Cup. As always, we plan to offer a wide variety of items: handmade crafts, jewelry, “White Elephant”, gift items, baked goods, wreaths and door decorations and more. If you have any items to contribute, please bring them to the Hobbies & Crafts room. As always, the community is cordially invited. Why not come shop with us, visit your friends and stay for lunch?
We are delighted to welcome back Kate Salley Palmer with a presentation about her latest recently published book: Almost Invisible: Black Patriots of the American Revolution. Kate will talk about her new book and mention several others she has written and illustrated on Thursday, October 16th at 3:00pm in the Magnolia Room.
As December approaches, we are beginning to schedule parties, entertainment and Christmas festivities. Our Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony is set for Thursday, December 4th at 6:00pm. Join us as we officially begin the Christmas season here at The Oaks.
As the long summer days slowly fade into fall, we look back on a summer that was anything but lazy!
We visited Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site in Beech Island, SC, home of SC Senator James Henry Hammond. Elizabeth Laney, daughter of our Wellness Director, Marian Youorski, is the interpreter at this site, and she gave a most informative tour of the house. A delicious lunch was enjoyed at Miller’s Bread Basket in Blackville on the return journey.
“Key Ingredients: America By Food” was a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institute recently on display at the Elloree Heritage Museum. Our group thoroughly enjoyed guided tours of the exhibit and the museum, followed by lunch at Clark’s Restaurant in Santee.
The Annual Peanut Boil hosted by St. Paul UMC of St. Matthews was, as always, a popular, well attended event.
As this publication goes to press, the group will be returning from our “Leaf Lookers” Tour, having spent three days and two nights at Lake Junaluska Assembly. Also, on the agenda was a concert by the Junaluska Singers and a ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad.
A number of our gentlemen met for their monthly Men’s Breakfast and, following a delicious breakfast, they had an interesting tour of the Gulbrandsen plant. Speakers and more tours are on the agenda for future meetings.
The Baillie Players, Buren & Dorothy Martin with children, Gloria & Milner, presented a delightful cabaret performance of “The Ransom.” As they enjoyed the show, attendees dined on Bananas Foster, prepared on-site by Food Service Director, Roy Dickson.
Sandra Aho Howard, Orangeburg native and daughter of resident, Doris Aho, entertained with a delightful piano concert of familiar sacred & secular pieces.
Instructor Freddie O’Bryant taught another AARP Driver’s Safety Course at The Oaks. Residents and community members learned valuable defensive driving techniques and how to adjust their driving to age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time.
A very special program was sponsored by Lovely Oaks Garden Club. Amanda McNulty of Clemson Extension and ETV’s “Making It Grow” presented a delightful program on “The Importance of Trees.”
We bade an official farewell to summer on Labor Day with delicious ice cream sundaes served in the courtyard.
A number of talented folks entered ceramics and crafts in the Orangeburg County Fair.
Our various clubs and groups have met throughout the summer and will continue into the fall:
The Charity Crafters, having donated beautiful caps and blankets for preemie babies at RMC, are now concentrating their efforts on colorful lap robes to be given to residents of the Veteran’s Victory House in Walterboro. These ladies have busy, nimble fingers. At last count, they already had 24 lap robes ready to go!
Computer Classes continue with each group usually receiving six to eight weeks of instruction with resident, Mary Reese, as instructor.
The Art Group completed a six week sketching class with resident, Addie Felkel as instructor. Until time for another class, the group will continue to meet on a weekly basis on Wednesdays at 4:00pm. Come and join them – sketch, paint….your choice. Everyone just works together and encourages each other.
The Book Worms’ Book Club chose as their theme for August…”Beach Reading.” Various authors or topics are selected throughout the year with books shared and reported on.
Taught by residents Ken & Ruth Horlacher, our Ballroom Dance Group continues to “cut a rug” every Tuesday evening at 6:30pm. Come learn a new dance or two or just brush up on your steps.
Weekly sessions are held in the Game Room with groups playing Bridge, Pinochle, Shanghai, Mah-Jongg, Skip-Bo or Canasta.
Several members of Lovely Oaks Garden Club attended the West Low Country District meeting at the Cinema of Orangeburg. The Orangeburg Council of Garden Clubs was host for the gathering. Lovely Oaks provided several door prizes for the luncheon.
Several times a year, residents from our various living areas get together for an Evening of Fine Dining. Tables are carefully set and wonderful menus are planned…the elegance and atmosphere of a fine restaurant without leaving campus!
An exciting new project begins!
After many years of caring for the precious photographs, artifacts and memorabilia of The Hawthorne School of Aeronautics, plans are underway for a permanent exhibit of these treasures. The present site of The Oaks was the training site for many French and American pilots during WWII. The United Methodist Church purchased the land and began its 50+ year story. In the early days of The Methodist Home for the Aging, many of the old barracks buildings and offices were used for resident accommodations, and the old mess hall was the first dining room for residents.
We are most fortunate to have the services of a professional Historian, Elizabeth Laney, to plan and create the display boards and write the script for the exhibit. Elizabeth has expertise and knowledge in the area of WWII airfields having worked on projects at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC and the Tuskegee Airmen Exhibit in Walterboro.
I am thrilled that we have the opportunity to create this lasting tribute to the men and women who lived, learned, worked and flew here. This is such an important part of our heritage and of Orangeburg County history.
If you have any information or memorabilia from the Hawthorne days, we would love to have them as part of the permanent display. If you would prefer, we can scan or copy your document/photo and return the original to you. If you spent any time at the air base, we would love to hear from you. As funding allows, we will place exhibits until the project is complete. Please contact Linda Biswell at 803-535-1570.
